Hopefully

Despite my best intentions, I am once again updating far too long after my last post.

It’s a struggle to do all of the things I want to do even when I have the luxury of time. The days slip past even faster when happy and despite all my whinging, I am happy.

I was searching for a blog title and this fits best.

Pakatan Harapan did not form a majority government but hopefully things work out better than before. It is really hard to be optimistic due to PTSD from the Sheraton Move.

As a hardcore consumer of books, TV shows, podcasts and what not, it’s really hard to recall right now all the things I was supposed to blog about in a regular timely manner.

I basically got obsessed with all things opioids first and then crypto cause I’m a sceptic and I’m constantly entertained by the scams and frauds in the land of tech crap.

Fell in love with these 2 Korean Netflix shows too.

The Glory which is all about a girl getting bullied who took revenge is IMPOSSIBLE for me to dislike. I am not a forgive and forget type. When I believe I’ve been wronged, I am a “curses upon you, your family, 8 generations, up, down, side to side” type cause that’s what they did in China and it made total sense.

On that light note, I’m going too stop here, and hopefully blog more consistently again.

Incest jests are the best

So much joy of watching House of the Dragon is derived from consuming post-show discussions and reactions. Reading tweets or memes about the unavoidable and uncomfortable viewer acceptance and rooting for Daemon and Rhaenyra’s relationship; hating on Alicent (worst ex-best friend ever) and Ser Criston (worst ex-one night stand ever); and name-calling Otto Hightower “Middle Finger” has been so fun.

It’s so awesome to hear the theme song blast on the living room TV every Monday night when we’ve rushed the kids to bed and savour 60 minutes or so of TV magic. 3 more episodes left and can’t wait!

On the other end of the spectrum is Rings of Power. I quit after episode 3.

Yes, it has a bigger budget and it is gorgeous on screen, but several sins were committed.

First, I can’t believe they cast the actress who played one of Barney’s most annoying ex-girlfriends on How I Met Your Mother as a major romantic character. It is so distracting! I still have residual annoyance whenever I look at her on screen. So kudos to Nazanin Boniadi for making an unforgettable Nora, but Bronwyn became a character I just don’t feel for. It’s also annoying that Bronwyn’s costume looks completely out of place because it’s the only sexy one?

Second, Rings of power is über slow and the show runners did a slow motion horse ride with Galadriel’s face in close up? It was like Ang Lee had directed the show. This was the final straw for me.

🤯 Documentary Found: Paradise Lost

I feasted on quite a number of documentaries lately: Girl in the Picture, Our Father, Baby God, The Most Hated Man on the Internet and Paradise Lost (all 3!).

HBO’s Paradise Lost was absolutely above the rest. It was so disturbing, thought provoking and moving.

I only stumbled upon it because I was googling great HBO documentaries and an article came up saying HBO has been killing it since 1996 with Paradise Lost. So I immediately checked to see if HBO Go had it, and it did!

I was absorbed from the opening scene. I did not expect actual footage of the crime scene and images of murder victims. Not just that but three 8 year old murder victims completely naked and mutilated.

It was a strange coincidence, but I had saved a tweet just before watching Paradise Lost. The tweet had had 10 “laws” @philsophypath had picked that would improve your life. The documentary was proof of this one.

Damien Echols was unconventional and unorthodox. He dressed unconventionally and never hid his interest in magic or satanism. He lived in Arkansas surrounded by fundamentalist Christians. Damien was essentially punished for being himself.

It was so sad because I also discovered from reading Devil’s Knot that Damien was also just being a typical teen chasing skirts. He had a horrible ex who told him he looked nice in black and he got into minor skirmishes with local law enforcement because of her as well.

Police, prosecutors and judges just wanted public pressure to end and chose to kill 4 birds with 1 stone. Close the unsolved murder and get rid of the outcast/troublemakers Damien, Jason and Jessie.

Another reason the documentaries were great for me, was that it made me realize that I’m not very different from the people of West Memphis. Whilst watching the second instalment, I kept accusing someone else of the murders and only realised my accusations rest on my own biases when I watched the third.

So yes, highly recommended.

Bingeing things

Like many, I’ve been bingeing Stranger Things. The best thing about Season 4 is that J finally watched it with me. Of course, he got hooked. So when I rewatched Seasons 1 to 3 during the month long break before Season 4: Volume 2, Jason watched Season 3 with me too.

I didn’t like Season 2 very much the first time I saw it. Especially the 11-centric episode. Kali? Nope. Lost Boys references? Nope.

Rewatching Season 2, I realized I was nitpicking. It wasn’t half as bad as I remembered. In fact, there were so many nods in Season 4 to previous seasons that it was fun spotting all the Easter eggs.

Season 3 remains my favourite season though. Who doesn’t like bright neon colours and Terminator references?

Back when Season 3 was released, I also discovered a hilarious after show podcast called Streaming Things which has excellent hosts with the kind of humour I appreciate. One of them does a killer Dr Brenner impression which makes me snort laugh out loud every time.

I decided to write them an email of my Season 5 predictions and was super happy last night when my email was chosen for their mailbag episode! Hahaha… I totally prefer their counter-predictions to mine because theirs is a lot more positive and I’m all for happy endings.

Can’t wait for Season 5.

Content

We watched The Batman last Thursday and I just loved it.

Even though the screen was black most of the time (a pet peeve), I just loved the detective vibe of the whole show. Robert Pattinson is also the Batman that all women deserve in return for all the unsought action films we put up with for our other halves. Gorgeous.

I’m also watching Euphoria and this series is just… crazy. There’s so much to process each episode. I’m glad it isn’t just the pure emo, we want to cut or kill ourselves teen trope that I thought it might be.

I was also rabidly listening, reading and watching all the Elizabeth Holmes, Theranos stuff.

Apart from all the media content I’ve been consuming, I’ve been feeling very content. It doesn’t feel appropriate considering all the Russia-Ukraine madness but in my own little world, I have been doing alright.

J and I solved our decade long plumbing woes and showers in our house are finally hotel level epic. I had been nagging J to install an instant water heater in place of the concealed rain shower we have in the guest bathroom but he decided to get a proper plumber to diagnose the issues we’ve been having instead.

Turned out our water pump was leaking, our existing storage water heater was too small and its motherboard gone, our water pipes were of random dimensions and sometimes not connected to the water pump when it should be.

The final magic touch was simply swapping the shower handle for a high pressure shower handle from Shopee! These babies seriously work. RM18 and it’s like a urine trickle to Niagara Falls. Haha.

My mind’s Maid up.

Yeah, it’s actually not. I just needed to get this pun in here.

I’ve just finished bingeing Maid on Netflix, and I am in awe.

In awe of a couple of jaws.

Those are some freaking amazing jaw genes that Andie McDowell has passed on to her daughter, Margaret Qualley.

My favourite scene is definitely this one… cause it’s so GIF worthy and I made a meme of it already. Haha

Margaret Qualley in Maid, Netflix

It was quite frustrating watching Alex at times cause she made such stupid decisions but I guess if she weren’t stupid in the first place, there’d be no story to tell.

Definitely added to my to-read list.

Normal People

Normal PeopleNormal People by Sally Rooney
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was so nice reading what Connell and Marianne were thinking as opposed to guessing what the bloody hell they were thinking when they said or did certain things. I had much more sympathy for both characters when I read the book compared to the tv series.

I enjoyed it especially when Rooney switched between Connell and Marianne’s reflections of the same conversation or events that had led to misunderstandings. Their perceptions at those points were so unfortunately coloured by negative thoughts of themselves and their respective emotional baggage. Felt very tragic every time.

Still gets 3 stars since I felt more optimistic for their future as a couple compared to the tv series and I always want a happy ending.

Don’t be a sotong, watch Squid Game

Netflix

I finished Squid Game yesterday. South Korean entertainment outdid itself again. So glad I got over my prejudices and gave K-dramas and K-pop a chance.

I’m sure all the nitpickers who say it isn’t that great because it is derivative of Battle Royale, Hunger Games etc. are right about it not being completely novel. Why should that stop it from being considered great though? Is the Mona Lisa less extraordinary because it isn’t the first ever portrait of a woman?

Whilst gripping, there were many times I couldn’t look at the screen. So much gore, and a sex-scene I was seriously not requesting for. The sets and costumes were exceptional. Netflix clearly doesn’t stinge.

The Goblin die hard had her eyes glued to the screen the couple of minutes Gong Yoo appeared. Haha. Someone told me that Gong Yoo looks like Kermit the Frog. There may be some truth in that but just call me Miss Piggy.

Jason and I did manage to predict both main plot twists. *Pats self for “mental superiority”*. Haha.

As it’s a Korean show, I reminded myself not to get attached to any of the characters and anticipated the saddest death for the nicest characters. *Pats self for not once bursting into tears àla Li Hoong watching My Girl or Jojo Rabbit*.

I still don’t understand the rules of Squid Game but rules don’t matter if knives can be used to win a game that’s supposed to be played without knives anyway.

I was also told I’d play like Sang-Woo if I were in Squid Game. This is firmly denied. I would be the wife who joined with her husband, ok. Haha.

Conversations with Friends

To stop my incessant online shopping, I’ve decided to pick up a book instead of immediately proceeding to checkout. As a result, I’m now reading Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney.

I saw ads for Rooney’s recently published third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are you and liked the series Normal People, so I chose her debut novel.

The secondary school first love relationship was depicted really well in Normal People. The characters’ vulnerableness was palpable. The actor Paul Mescal is uber likeable. Unfortunately, the plot took a rubbish turn at the end. I regretted recommending the show to others before finishing it.

All hail gorgeous book covers!
Daisy Edgar Jones and Paul Mescal in Normal People, Hulu

Yes, Marianne is self-destructive but it didn’t stop her choices from being gross and unrelateable. If I knew where things were heading, I wouldn’t have watched the series at all.

I can also see from the book that Rooney likes her characters who, like her, are gifted in English and attended Trinity College, Dublin. Pretty sure Rooney must have hoildayed in expensive European villas when she was in uni too.

The King’s gonna be missed.

So sad that Michael K Williams was found dead yesterday due to a suspected drug overdose.

Michael K Williams in The Wire, HBO

I binged the entire series of The Wire in a week with Jason during this lockdown. I hadn’t watched it before and always read that it’s one of the best TV shows of all time. So when I started watching it, it was with some skepticism that it could live up to all the hype and it absolutely did.

I started rewatching the whole series as I was watching it, and listened to hours of podcast discussions about the show with so much pleasure and I’m pretty sure I talked everyone’s ear off about the show.

It really isn’t fair to compare the series to Breaking Bad or Sopranos. Those were focused more on their main characters, what’s going on in their minds, the challenges they faced or overcame. The Wire was mind-blowing in the way it managed to show us the universe its characters were in.

At the end of the series, it felt like we knew the Game and Baltimore City. The series managed to do it with characters that weren’t one dimensional and had arcs that just felt realistic. Even though they had little screen time, the actors managed to make us feel vested in them and stir up our feelings, and Micheal K Williams is obviously one of them. Obama approved, OK?

Can’t imagine I would have loved the show as much without Omar Little whistling “Farmer in the Dell”, the courtroom scene, and his sheer presence or quotes.

“You come at the king, you best not miss.”
